COUNCIL LAUNCHES CASH FOR RUBBISH SCHEME

01-May-2008
The Town of Port Hedland has reinvigorated an incentive scheme to encourage community groups to keep the Town clean and fundraise for a good cause.

The scheme now provides $5 for each bag of rubbish collected and disposed at the South Hedland Landfill, by not for profit and community groups.

Community groups, sporting organisations and schools are invited to take advantage of the scheme and register with Council to clean up litter around Port and South Hedland.

This initiative aims to support community-based environmental initiatives, and encourage residents to take pride in their surroundings.

“Whether it’s just collecting rubbish lying on the street or clean up a local park or a beach site, this cash for rubbish scheme is a great incentive for people to get involved and participate as part of a group,” said Mayor Stan Martin.

“Council is encouraging residents to do their part to help keep the Town clean - every little bit of help counts to make a difference,” he added.

Baler Primary School Science Coordinator, Ms Natalie Earl, said that over 500 school students took part in this year’s Clean Up Australia Day.

“The kids were all ready with hats, gloves and bags and collected 77 bags of rubbish within the area, in around 30 minutes – which is a fantastic result.  We raised $385 to go towards buying seeds and equipment for our vegetable garden and also gave the kids the chance to have fun while raising awareness about litter issues in Town.”

The Town of Port Hedland recorded a total of 230 bags collected during the event, with $1,150 claimed by schools and community groups.

To participate and be eligible for the cash reward scheme, residents should complete registration forms available from the Town of Port Hedland and nominate a local litter spot for clean up.

Rubbish bags will need to be collected from the Civic Centre prior to commencing the clean up event, together with appropriate documentation.
