CELEBRATIONS LINE UP FOR TOWN’S BIRTHDAY

15-10-2009
Port Hedland is turning 113 and the Town’s Events Services have arranged a huge array of activities and entertainment to celebrate the ‘Hedland Heritage and Marine Festival’.

The Festival will take place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th of October. The program kicks off with a community fair and will be run from 10am to 4pm on Saturday along Edgar Street and Marrapikurinya Park in the Port Hedland CBD.

A stage will be erected on Richardson Street, featuring live performances by musicians Cory Colum, Amanda Jane Smith, and “Hedland Crew”.  The stage will also host the “Little Miss Pilbara” competition and the judging of “Hedland’s Best Home Brew”.

The whole street will be in party mode with stalls and amusements including, children’s rides and activities, food stalls and businesses on display. The Courthouse Gallery will join in the celebrations and open its doors for the community to view the new exhibition, “Lush”, with activities and stalls also taking place on the Courthouse lawns.

History buffs will also have the chance to immerse themselves in Hedland’s last 113 years by visiting the Dalgety House Museum through a raffle that requires entries be validated at the museum.  A barbeque will be held for festival goers at Dalgety House from 5pm.

“Downtown Port Hedland will be completely transformed, with live entertainment on stage, marquees, market and food stalls.  The whole community is invited to join in the festivities to celebrate the Town’s 113th Anniversary,” Events Coordinator Michael Frawley said.

“The evening will also feature one of Australia’s most acclaimed pianists, Gil Sullivan, with a silver service meal at the Esplanade Hotel.  Gil has been described as The finest interpreter of Mozart in the World’”, and has performed extensively internationally in Chicago, the Vietnam National Opera House, the National Concert Halls of Thailand, and Taiwan to name a few.”

The evening event will include a gourmet three course meal and dinner music provided by members of the Pilbara Music Society, along with a recital by Gil Sullivan.  Tickets can be purchased online by going to http://www.mattdann.porthedland.wa.gov.au/ticket_splash.htm

Sunday’s program will feature Hedland Young Leaders Program participants also pitching in on the festivities and creating a marine-themed urban artwork on the ablutions block located at the Pretty Pool Park.  The mural will be launched, once completed, with a community BBQ at lunchtime.
