RESIDENTS INVITED TO COMMENT ON ICONIC PARK
The urban renewal project will play an important role in addressing the needs of residents for improved recreational facilities, expressed through Council community surveys in 2006 and 2007.
The new Park will spread over 2Ha and will be located at the intersections of Cottier Drive, Kennedy Street and Dale Street. The proposed facility features unique aquatic characteristics, along with modern pieces of artistic sculptures, soccer/hockey areas, and innovative playground equipment to maximise safe and inclusive play as well as enhanced opportunities for communal integration across all age ranges.
$4.35Million has been allocated by the Town of Port Hedland, BHP Billiton Iron Ore and the South Hedland New Living Project, to undertake the first stages of the Park. Additional funding required for the second phase of the project is currently being sourced by Council.
“Once the project is completed, it will be the best park in the Pilbara by a long way,” Town of Port Hedland Mayor Stan Martin said.
Council will be working closely with community members and stakeholders to identify priority features to be constructed during the first stage.
“Community involvement and input is vital. We want make sure that we spend the available money on items that the community thinks are the most important,” Cr Martin added.
Interactive displays will be held at the South Hedland Shopping Centre on the 11th to the 13th of December, while Port Hedland residents will the opportunity to have their say to shape the development of this significant facility for the community on the 15th to the 17th of January 2009, at the Port Hedland Boulevard. Children will also have the chance to tell Council what they think, enter colouring competitions and win some great prizes on the day.
